Emotional Intelligence Self-Worth

Self-worth and self-esteem are two vastly different things.

Allow me to explain.

Self-esteem is external.

Self-esteem is the value we think we have in the eyes of others. It is the kudos, the accolades, and the validation that was given to us by our peers. The main problem with self-esteem is that it changes continuously; people change their mind about us and we also change our mind about ourselves. Self-esteem is also easily taken away; a wrong word, a negative behaviour, and a person’s external image might crumble into a ‘I’m never good enough!’ or ‘What’s wrong with me?’

Self-worth is internal.

Self-worth is our essential value. Our essential value never changes (it has nothing to do with how you/others think of you) and it can never be taken away (it is intrinsic; you were born with it). People who exude higher self-worth care less about others’ fleeting opinions of them (what self-esteem is about) because they focus more on feeling good about themselves and expressing that goodness within them.

What are the characteristics of people who exude higher self-worth?

  • Taking the time to really get to know ourselves.

  • Investing in ourselves.

  • Being genuinely curious to discover what we will accept, or tolerate, and even what is non-negotiable for us.

  • Upholding strong, healthy emotional boundaries.

  • Standing up for what we deeply believe in even if it might mean potential rejection from others.

  • Caring more about being able to live with ourselves authentically than seeking  approval from others.

So how do we get to a point where we exude a higher self-worth?
To assist you, here’s an analogy:
Imagine that exuding self-worth is being a radio transmission tower with your name on it. It is yours and only yours. Every person has their own radio transmission tower. What this means for you is: your self-worth is your self-worth. It is no one else’s. It will always be yours to feel and exude.

Keeping this analogy in mind, I now have some questions for you:
~What is the name of your ongoing radio broadcast? Personally, I like The Here And Now with _______ (write your name here).
~ Which songs (beliefs) are now playing on your show? Some examples of low self-worth beliefs may be Look at me, You’re my everything, Lost without you. Some examples of higher self-worth beliefs may be Here comes the sun, Daring to be me, I am worthy, etc. The songs (beliefs) we choose determine how much self-worth we get to feel and exude in any given moment.
~ Who is on your team? No one does it alone. A great radio show broadcast has a great team working together towards the common goal of making it a great show. Surround yourself with people who will empower you to feel and exude higher self-worth.

Here are eight (8) more tips for you to exude higher self-worth:

  1. Become aware that you are a transmitting tower of frequencies. Make your vibes positive.

  2. Know that you are transmitting live, 24/hours a day, 365 days a year.

  3. Choose your thoughts carefully as they direct what’s playing (your songs/beliefs) on your show.

  4. Surround yourself with a team of people who want you to greatly succeed.

  5. Openly share your story without the fear of guilt, shame, or rejection.

  6. Be you. Do you. This is your radio transmitting tower. It has your name on it!

  7. Uphold strong, healthy emotional boundaries. Each of us has a transmitting tower.

  8. Be genuinely curious to discover your version of I am.
